Business travel is more than just moving from A to B — it’s a vital driver of the European economy, cross-border collaboration, and innovation.
In 2023, business travel spending within the EU reached an estimated €68.8 billion, up from €60.3 billion in 2022.
This growing sector supports not only corporations but also local economies across the EU, contributing to regional employment, hospitality, and services.
Key figures (Eurostat & BT4Europe)
- Business travel made up 13% of total tourism expenditure in 2022.
- 467 million business trips were taken by 40 million travellers in 2023.
- Professional travel accounted for 10% of total trips, mainly for client meetings, events, and training.
- An estimated 2 million companies, NGOs, and public institutions rely on business travel to stay competitive.
While recovery after COVID-19 has been strong, future growth is expected to stabilise. Now is the time to ensure the conditions for business travel are aligned with Europe’s economic, environmental, and strategic goals.
At BT4Europe, we advocate for a sustainable and future-ready business travel ecosystem. Our role is to share industry knowledge, collaborate with EU institutions, and highlight the needs of corporate travellers as we shape the Single Market of tomorrow.
👉 Smart policy, strategic investment, and collaboration are key. By enabling business travel, we support Europe’s connectivity, competitiveness, and innovation potential on the global stage.
