Regulation (EU) No 692/2011 has, for more than a decade, provided the common framework for developing, producing and disseminating European tourism statistics.
The European Commission is now preparing a new initiative to make this framework fit for the future, ensuring it reflects evolving user needs, integrates new data sources and modern methods, and produces more complete, timely and cost‑efficient statistics—without increasing the net reporting burden.
A public consultation is expected in Q1 2026, offering stakeholders a key opportunity to shape the future of EU‑level tourism data.
At BT4Europe, we strongly welcome this initiative.
Business travel is not yet sufficiently visible in European tourism statistics, despite its economic and strategic relevance for Europe’s Single Market.
As part of this process, BT4Europe will advocate for:
- Better, more consistent business travel data within the revised statistical framework
- The inclusion of “purpose of trip”—including business travel—in the EU Tourism Dashboard, which currently visualises key tourism indicators and supports policymaking through trusted data sources.
Improved visibility of business travel will help policymakers understand mobility patterns more accurately, support competitiveness, and align data collection with real‑world mobility needs across Europe.
We will continue to keep the BT4Europe Facts & Figures community informed as soon as the consultation is officially launched—and look forward to contributing constructively to this important process.
